I lived in Appleby until 1970 and was the last Civil Servant in the town before the Government In their wisdom, decided that the place was too small to warrant my presence.I went on to higher things and retired in 1991 when we returned to the area, to live in Morland. However, as luck would have it, a chap called Peter (Wright?) wrote 'The Stainmore Railway' and my article was submitted to a Railway Magazine just as his book came out. I suppose my article was superfluous. Despite this, I gained great enjoyment visiting the old stations and most people were most kind and welcoming and some gave me unseen photographs for inclusion in my effort. All the work and photography took place in 1992. I left Cumbria for the second time in 1994 and now I am fully retired in Norwich.
