In the picture above a Cleater and Workington Junction Railway engine shunting near Sheriff Gate. The Engine is on the branch to Salterhall Quarry. This picture we think is the only photo of the line when it was in operation but we hope to be proved wrong if we can find some more. The line to Salterhall Quarry was laid with bullhead rail in chairs and the R&KFR track was flat bottom spiked directly to the sleepers. The R&KFR rail was 2-hand when first layed down and may well have been well worn by time the photo was taken. When the Salterhall Quarries took over the section of railway to Rowrah Tom believes the track had to be relaid with flatbottom rail.
