Appleby East railway station was built in 1861 and offered a fully integrated passenger and freight facility. The connection between the Midland Railway and the North Eastern branch was mainly only ever used for freight working except for a short experiment whereby North Eastern trains ran from Appleby West Station to Penrith connecting from Midland expresses in to London & North Western trains into Penrith. In the 1950's the new DMU's ran on circular excursions from Carlisle via the Settle-Carlisle route, Appleby West, Appleby Junction, Penrith and West Coast Line. The connection was also used for diverting traffic if there were any problems on the Settle-Carlisle or West Coast Line routes. The Eden Valley Railway Trust was formed in 1995 with the aim of reopening the remaining 6 mile Appleby to Flitholme section.
