The J21 locos did sterling work on the Stainmore route; smaller locos were needed on the stainmore route, because of the weight restrictions over Deepdale and Belah Viaducts. This J21 is heading a lakes express out of Kirkby Stephen. If you look carefully in the background, you get to see just how big Kirkby Stephen station was. British Rail standards and Ivatt Moguals eventually ousted the J21 locos. The last J21 ran on the stainmore line on the 7th May 1960. Picture by Eddie Foster.
